Tucked in Thedtsho, Wangdue Phodrang, the Technical Training Institute (TTI) Samthang has spent over two decades shaping Bhutan’s technical and vocational education landscape — and it’s now entering one of the most ambitious chapters in its history.TTI Samthang was established on June 26, 2003, formed through the bifurcation of the Royal Technical Institute and the National Driving Training Institute, and formally inaugurated by Lyonpo Sangay Ngedup. Since then, the institute has built a reputation as a hands-on training ground for youth looking to enter Bhutan’s skilled workforce.

Today, the institute runs thirteen active courses, with strengths in automobile technology, heavy vehicle driving, and earthmoving operations. Its mission is straightforward: equip trainees with recognized, practical skills that translate directly into employment.One standout innovation at TTI Samthang is its use of driving and operating simulators for heavy vehicle and earth mover training. Instead of putting first-time drivers straight behind the wheel of costly machinery, trainees now practice on simulators first — building confidence, cutting fuel and maintenance costs for the institute, and creating a safer path toward operating real equipment. For many trainees, especially those with no prior driving experience, this shift has made a genuinely intimidating first step far more manageable.
